Collection: Edge Grain Butcher Block Countertop

What is Edge Grain? When we talk about a Butcher Block Countertop or a wood countertop, we first should explain its appearance.  This is the most common type of wooden countertop and the wood grain and the construction runs from left to right.  We use the term "staves" to refer to each individual plank.

Our edge grain counter tops feature staves that are the full length of the countertop--you won't find any finger joints or butt joints (go ahead, laugh it up) in our work.  That method is often used as a cost-saving method from larger businesses.

End grain, the "opposite" so to speak of Edge Grain, is often seen as the superior of the two, but that's not totally the case.  Edge grain will expand and contract less, especially along the length. Fortunately, the Bay Area should provide very normal and very regular conditions. Edge grain is also less fragile when comparing the two different grain orientations at the same thickness. Talking about thickness, Edge Grain can maintain its strength at a thinner thickness than End Grain. We recommend that edge grain should be no thinner than 1.25" if it is meant to be a countertop.
